Cook Family Park

Natural Common Ground

The community of Pleasant Grove, Utah is united thanks to Cook Family Park—a new play space that brings visitors of all ages and abilities together through nature-inspired adventures.

The playground features an inclusive Sky Towers^® structure where kids can interact with sensory play panels, navigate through daring net climbers, or rush down one of the many spiraling slides. The variety of play events on and surrounding the structure ensure that everyone can enjoy a distinct play experience.

The nature-themed aesthetic also bonds the community. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, designer Big T Recreation included local fauna throughout the play space. Kids can hang out with mountain lions, crawl with bears, or even scamper beside foxes. The inspiration continues onto the main structure with animals featured across the top along with evergreen post toppers and a steel mountain peak.

The playground was made possible in large part thanks to the Cook Center for Human Connection. A family foundation, the Cooks wanted to give back to the community by providing a fun gathering space for families and friends.

Since opening, the playground has drawn in visitors from across Utah, creating a true common ground to connect every generation, for generations.

Black Tooth Park

Black Tooth Park in Sheridan, Wyoming debuted a new inclusive playground to unite children of all ages and abilities in the community. The 18,600 sq. ft. play space strategically builds upon some of Playworld’s signature products to create a distinct layout that promises adventure for every child.

The expansive PlayCubes^® structure, for instance, connects to double slides which provide a rewarding rush after climbing. The playground also features rope climbers Quito^®, Naica^®, and the inclusive Cone Spinner, which allows users to scale up the ropes or sit on the base as the climber spins.

Other inclusive play opportunities include the Cozy Connect, Concerto, Unity^® Dome, and a ramped play structure. A larger Sky Towers^® structure is also featured on the playground, complete with a swirling tube slide and myriad of climbing challenges. By offering play events across varying challenge levels, the playground guarantees that everyone can experience an enjoyable adventure.

The opening of the playground marks the completion of Black Tooth Park’s fourth phase in their renovation. Now, families and friends from across Wyoming can come together for daring, inclusive fun.

Little Island Park

Visitors and locals alike can enjoy fun in the sun at Little Island Park’s new playground! Brightly colored with a myriad of daring play opportunities, this playground serves as Virginia Beach’s newest family attraction.

The playground features a RopeScapes^® layout with Naica^® and Quito^® offering challenging rope paths for adventurers to choose from. Quito also features the Mighty Descent slide, which encourages family and friends of all ages to join in on the action with its extra-wide bedway. Play panels and swings are also featured in the space for authentic imaginative and sensory play.

The playground’s beachside location was carefully considered throughout the design process. Shades are located across the play space, protecting both the equipment and visitors from summer heat and harmful UV rays. Also helping to keep the equipment in top condition is our super durable polyester powder coating. One of the longest lasting paint finishes in the industry, the coating resists abrasion, corrosion, mechanical damage, and color fading.

With distinct design and high-quality craftsmanship, Little Island Park is sure to remain a vibrant gathering space in the community for years to come.

Wenatchee Riverfront Park

The “Apple Capital of the World” celebrates its status with an apple-themed playground in Wenatchee Riverfront Park! Located in Wenatchee, Washington, the new play space promises visitors of all ages and abilities fresh fun and sweet adventures.

Shaped like an apple, the main play structure immediately draws visitors in with its distinct, eye-catching design. Accessible via a ramp or climbers, the interior offers riverside views as well as daring climbing opportunities. Two slides, a swirling tube slide and a sensory roller slide, are attached the structure as well.

Also taking inspiration from the community is a themed scavenger hunt that highlights local fruit, activities, and animals. Pictures are located throughout the play space at a variety of heights, ensuring that everyone can join in the game.

Climbers, sensory equipment, and social play opportunities are also located throughout the space, giving every visitor the opportunity to find an event to enjoy. With a surrounding fence to prevent elopement, caregivers can allow their children to adventure across the space with peace of mind.

The design of this play space reflects the community’s values not just through its aesthetic, but through its inclusivity as well. Now, generations of residents and visitors will have an authentic play space that brings them together—regardless of their age or ability level.

Knoxville Smokies Minor League Baseball Stadium

A Home Run for Fans

Previously based in the suburbs, Tennessee’s Knoxville Smokies opened this Minor League Baseball season in a brand-new stadium downtown—complete with an entirely baseball-themed play space.

Designed by Playworld Preferred, the play space celebrates the sport both on and around the main structure through custom post toppers, panels, and climbers. However, it’s PlayHills^® that truly gives young fans a distinct baseball experience.

“This playground features one of the most unique perspectives of this ballpark,” said Richie Juliano, Outside Events Coordinator for the Smokies. “If you climb to the very top, you actually get a view of the pitcher’s mound and home plate.”

The view isn’t the only appeal to climbing, though. Kids and adults alike enjoy sliding down the 8-foot Mighty Descent together, turning the play space into a daring cross-generational adventure. Every fourth inning, fans are even joined by Smokies mascots!

“A playground like this is not just for play,” said Beth Ramer, Sales Representative at Playworld Preferred. “It’s an area where you can connect parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends.”

The new stadium serves as the premier spot for sports, entertainment, and play in Knoxville. With every game, more and more fans eagerly line up to get back on the playground.

“The reaction from our families has been tremendous,” said Juliano. “When we see kids running from the stands to the playground, it means Playworld did exactly what we wanted them to do.”

Smith Ranch Regional Park

Designed by Big T Recreation, Smith Ranch Regional Park’s new playground invites kids of all ages and abilities to grow and play together.

The playground features custom climbers throughout its design, creating a nature-inspired aesthetic that complements the surrounding landscape. Adventurers can soar on the back of an eagle, slither up the side of a serpent, or navigate their way through the mountainous SkyTowers^®.

A variety of RopeScapes^™ also surround the main structure, inviting kids to challenge their skills across daring layouts such as Naica^™ and Quito^™. Complete with a PlayCubes^® structure, PlayForm 7, and numerous rewarding slides, the space is every young climber’s dream come true.

Two smaller play areas are located nearby along with an inclusive Cone Spinner, providing sensory engagement and imaginative play opportunities for visitors of all ability levels to enjoy together.

Thanks to its striking design and wide array of activities, the playground serves as a gathering space that the community can be proud of for years to come.

Lehi City Family Park

Inspired by the city’s history in aviation, Lehi, Utah debuted an inclusive playground for the entire community to enjoy together in Family Park.

The one-acre play space inspires kids to climb their way to the skies with a towering play structure and a variety of freestanding play events. Ramps ensure that kids of all ability levels can join their friends on the play structure as they explore engaging play panels and admire stunning views. Challenging climbing components are also located throughout, allowing advanced climbers to reach some of the more daring slides—such as the 30ft tunnel slide that swirls around the tallest tower.

Inclusive play opportunities can also be found at the ground level through numerous freestanding events. NEOS Arc, for example, is Playworld^®’s inclusive electronic play system that combines physical activity with kids’ fondness for video games. Its buttons, located at a variety of heights, ensure kids of all ages and abilities can join in on the action. Similarly, ZoomTrax features a zipline-like experience with an accessible seat and a disk seat, so kids of all abilities can feel a delightful rush.

The city’s love for aviation is displayed through accents such as the custom airplane-themed AeroGlider, and an airplane-inspired shade. The playground’s design also complements the surrounding landscape with a natural color scheme and the mountainous Denali Net.

Thanks to expert inclusive design, this expansive playground is guaranteed to unite generations of families and friends—regardless of their ability level.

The Dunham School

The Dunham School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana looks beyond academics to help children in their community grow! Elementary school students are encouraged to develop their physical, sensory, and social skills through their daring new playground, Tiger Town.

Designed by Pelican Playgrounds, Tiger Town is full of opportunities for students to come together, whether it’s through the main play structure with its challenging climbs and adventurous slides, or through nearby freestanding equipment such as Quatro Seesaw, a PlayCubes^® climber, a spinning rope climber, or a custom tiger climber.

The playground also features Quito—a 15.54’ freestanding net climber named for Ecuador’s capital, the closest capital city to the equator and the second highest in the world. Here, kids can traverse through 3-levels of climbing ropes, strengthen their bonds with one another by hanging out in multiple cozy spaces, or experience an adrenaline rush as they slide down the attached Mighty Descent.

In addition to helping kids burn energy and develop their physical skills, play provides benefits in the classroom by improving focus, inspiring creativity, and increasing lesson retention. As generations of students gather to explore this innovative play space, they’ll be better prepared and empowered to unite as a community in the future.

Piney Orchard Playground

Created by Playground Specialists, Piney Orchard Playground provides a distinct play experience for residents of all ages in Odenton, Maryland!

From the red top of SkyTowers^® to the blue and purple Climbing Squares, the main structure of this playground creates an eye-catching rainbow that moves across the entire space. Yellow and green steel climbers can be found throughout the middle of the structure, challenging kids’ strength and coordination in a multitude of ways. Rainbow slides are also located throughout, with a towering tube slide for daring climbers as well as shorter slides for younger children.

The rainbow motif continues throughout the space in the form of a multi-colored PlayCubes^® structure, a striking orange and green Unity^® Teeter Tunnel^®, and blue and purple Unity^® Steppers. Pops of color can also be found at the PlayTown^™ Garden Sensory Walls, where kids can engage with thought-provoking inserts, and at the swings, where kids can enjoy a unique vestibular experience together via Hoopla Swing.

At the end of a day here, kids may not find gold—but they’ll certainly leave with friendships and memories to be treasured for years to come.

Julia’s Junction

Determined to play alongside her friends, Julia Grassmick and her family partnered with the city of West Kelowna to create the first inclusive playground in their community!

Kids of all ability levels have plenty of options when it comes to choosing what play activity they’d like to partake in. The main play structure houses Accessible Climber, ensuring anyone with a mobility device is able to join their friends at the top of the playground. There, they can enjoy the rush of sliding down Mighty Descent, or stay and engage with the play panels located throughout the design.

Inclusive play activities also surround the structure. For swaying fun, Aero Glider and Hoopla Swing provide the perfect chance to feel the breeze, while other products such as Balance Trax offers a supportive layout for explorers.

Dispersed throughout the play space are numerous pieces from Unity^®—our collection of modernized playground classics designed specifically to bring kids together. Unity Dome, RockR, and Teeter Tunnel each provide a unique play experience that multiple kids can enjoy at once.

All ages are accommodated too, with various PlayTown^™ pieces such as Truck and Community Helpers providing a place for children ages 2 – 5 to engage in pretend play on their level. Their accessible design and open sightlines mean that inclusion begins at an earlier age for the next generation.

West Fenwick Park

Visitors of all ages and abilities can gather in Kent, Washington at West Fenwick Park’s inclusive playground. Designed by Northwest Playground Equipment Inc., the custom playground features all of the 8 keys to inclusion: social play, sensory play, multiple levels of challenge, zones, maneuverability, unitary surfacing, fencing, and, of course, the “Coolest Thing”.

The playground is divided into zones with similar equipment grouped together in each area. Visitors can use the bright orientation path as a clear guide to clusters of climbers, an accessibe structure, and a variety of slides and sensory play activities.

Each zone has play activities of varying difficulty, ensuring everyone can enjoy daring fun at their level. They’re also strategically spaced to allow for easy maneuverability for those with mobility devices. Through these intentional design choices, visitors of all ages and abilities are encouraged to socialize and interact with one another.

Best of all, the “Coolest Thing” is available to everyone. Tons of tunnel slides and custom play opportunities can be used regardless of ability level thanks to the unitary surfacing and mindful landscaping. The fence surrounding the area also prevents children from running or wandering out of the play space, which provides peace of mind for caregivers.

Altogether, this inclusive play space has unlocked generations of authentic adventures that continue to unite the entire community.

Each year, the city of Windsor selects a few local playgrounds to be refreshed with the goal of putting great play destinations within reach of every family. While the playground at Walker Homesite Park might be small, it’s a wildly popular place for families, especially those taking advantage of the surrounding baseball diamonds.

Before the city expanded more than 40 years ago, this area was occupied primarily by farmland. To honor that local history, the city selected a farm-themed destination playground. In accordance with requirements for separate play areas for kids ages 5 to 12 and 12 months to 5 years, two separate play structures with custom panels were created. The 5-12 structure was designed to look like a tractor parked next to a silo. A doublewide ramp provides enhanced access so kids with mobility devices can climb on board. The early childhood structure off to the side provides just enough challenge for little ones and utilizes custom panels and a roof to take on the appearance of a barn. Even the poured-in-place surfacing has been customized with tire track marks leading from the tractor.

At the other end of the play space is an area just for swinging, which includes the multi-user Hoopla Swing. The addition of a freestanding Cozy Cocoon finishes off the playground, giving kids a quiet place to retreat to or spin the day away and dream of simpler times.

This housing community needed a quality play space for its residents that offered a balance of play value, playground size, and affordability. Playworld designed a playground structure with components that optimized available space and dollars. Built next to the clubhouse, it’s a popular place to socialize and play—and a selling feature for prospective residents.

Union Park

In Union Park, among a beautiful landscape full of trees, was an old, rarely used post and platform playground that had fallen into disrepair. A few years ago, the park was identified as a capital improvement project—one the Salt Lake County community was excited to vote into action. Now, among the trees, you’ll find a playground that complements the natural landscape and inspires the imagination—a popular playground for children of all ages in the Fort Union area of Midvale, Utah.

Playworld representative Big T Recreation worked with Salt Lake County to create a playground atmosphere that blends in seamlessly with the surrounding natural beauty. Inspired by nature, Branch Out^® was the solution. This series of play equipment mimics natural elements both in aesthetics and adventure. In Union Park, you’ll find a modern tree that provides shade and an opportunity to climb, cargo nets of various shapes and sizes that challenge coordination and balance, a few outlooks inspired by tree houses, and slides that rush you back down to the ground to start all over again.

All of these elements come together to create a retreat in the middle of Union Park that’s full of adventure—a favorite for kids of all ages.

Tom Strouhal Little River Park

A mile-wide tornado nearly destroyed everything in Moore, Oklahoma. Rebuilding began with the playground at Little River Park—one of the first symbols of Moore’s strong spirit. A community build brought everyone together. The pirate theme ties in with the park’s three lakes.

Swan Creek Preserve Metropark

A master plan to restore interest in nature by increasing access to parks is underway in Toledo. Set along the meandering Swan Creek, this metropark—one of more than 15—features a unique landscape. The creek’s winding curves create oxbows: bowing ponds made when high water changes the stream’s route.

When the customer came to us wanting a unique, hybrid play space, we used the landscape as inspiration. We studied the available space in person and worked intimately with the park to develop a concept. It was decided that completely custom net structures would give us the most design flexibility.

A net form for ages 2-5 mimics the oxbows of the preserve, and has two shade shelters with activities where little ones can just relax. A custom net and two hill slides make use of the space’s natural contours, giving kids a variety of ways to ascend and descend from the hill. The main structure takes inspiration from post-and-platform systems, but replaces platforms with nets—something that would later inspire us to create infiNET^™. Faux wood portals and the perfect color scheme complement the environment, inviting kids to explore the beauty of the outdoors in the Toledo area.

Surrey Downs

Surrey Downs Park has a long history of play. Over 50 years ago, the property was home to Surrey Downs Elementary School. As time went on, the property changed, eventually transferring to the City of Bellevue and becoming dedicated as a park. When the park was up for renovation, the community was excited to help develop a plan for the park—one of the first things on their list? A playground.

Playworld representative Northwest Playground Equipment, Inc., worked with the City and their Landscape Architect to create a playground where children are allowed an open-ended play experience, being able to climb up and around a series of cascading net platforms, walk across rope bridges, access lookout points perched high in the sky, and slide back down to the ground to start all over again. The playground is built right into the hillside, which includes ADA access all the way up to the highest point of the park with an accessible ramp that wheels onto the play structure. The hill even provides the perfect launching point for a zipline. Across from the school-age playground, there’s an area for swings with inclusive seats, as well as an early childhood playground built into and around a climbable turf mound.

While the park is open to the greater Bellevue community, it primarily serves the children and families in the Surrey Downs neighborhood overlooking the park—and the color palette shows it. The bright colors—chartreuse, orange, and aqua—were inspired by a mid-century color scheme, reflective of the era when this neighborhood was built. After all this time, play is still the focus of the property known as Surrey Downs Park.

Stodden Park

Families travel from surrounding communities to play at the new playground in Stodden Park—an attraction that has had an economic impact on the old mining town of Butte, Montana. This play space is certainly something special—the theme celebrates the rich mining history of the community while embracing active and inclusive play. The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, an organization with local ties, gave a generous gift to make this play destination possible.

Playworld representative Northwest Playground Equipment, Inc., worked with the City-County of Butte Silver Bow to bring it to life. Kids can climb to the top of a lookout tower that resembles a mining elevator and spend time playing on a big haul truck. They can also enjoy climbing on a structure that resembles “The Big M”—a well-known landmark nearby. The best part is the inclusive design—kids with limited mobility are also able to access it all because it was designed for every kid to be able to play.

The combination of rich history and modern play isn’t limited to the equipment; this playground is a part of something bigger—the transformation of a mining town with a rich history.

Hunt Military Communities is a premier military housing developer dedicated to providing military families with first-class amenities. They manage all new neighborhood construction and property maintenance, so when it came to building a playground, they were looking for a partner who could provide a unique play space and proven, durable products.

This playground is located on the Joint Base Charleston Air Base next to the community center, so it needed to be a welcoming space where all the families on base could connect. Playworld designed an aeronautical-themed play space full of custom features. The main rocket-like play structure for kids ages 5-12 features graphic panels with flames and American flare, fins you can climb on, a 15-foot spiral slide, and a 13-foot tube slide. The tall tower sparks imaginative play as kids climb up and blast off on a sliding adventure.

The second custom play structure for ages 2-12 is an accessible design with graphic panels that resemble the C-17 Globemaster planes that fly out of the base. Other freestanding pieces like a LiveWire Zip Line and Teeter Tunnel give kids a thrilling ride and encourage cooperative play.

When the playground was completed, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held with the base commander and hundreds of residents. They couldn’t have been more excited for this new space and felt that it was a perfect representation of their community.

Sophie & Madigan’s Playground

Enchanted Memories

Named after sisters Sophie and Madigan Lillard, this fairytale-themed memorial playground promises a plethora of fun-filled, whimsical adventures. Kids can climb Rapunzel’s tower like dashing heroes, hang out at the Lost Boys Tree House, or explore the magical offerings of Wonderland. Each part of the playground features equipment inspired by moments in the Lillard sisters’ lives, honoring their spirits by cultivating a welcoming environment where kids of all ages and abilities can play together.

Senator Jean Preston Memorial Park

This rural town right off the coast of North Carolina had big plans to build an inclusive playground in the heart of town in memory of a local retired special education teacher, principal, and politician. The community alone contributed nearly $50,000 in donations. Then, Emerald Isle learned that they were one of 30 locations in eastern North Carolina chosen to receive a Play Together Accessible Playground grant from Trillium Health Resources. With the added $225,000, in just under two months, they transformed an empty lot by the local docks into a completely inclusive and sensory-rich destination playground.

All of the “coolest” playground equipment is fully accessible and promotes cooperation between kids of all abilities. The Cruise Line^™, AeroGlider^™, and Unity^® RockR all encourage parents, siblings, or fellow playmates to join in on the action together, providing enough space so that any child can transfer on and take a ride.

Another key inclusive feature is the double-wide ramps of the main play structure, which enable a better traffic flow for kids with and without mobility devices. A variety of panels along the way provide cognitive and sensory stimulation for everyone. Several other smaller freestanding products around the playground, such as Cozy Cocoon^™, Spin Cup, and Moon Rock Climber, provide comfy spots and vestibular stimulation away from the main action. And of course, no inclusive playground is complete without poured-in-place safety surfacing, which allows children, parents, and grandparents alike to access the play area with ease.

Not only was this play space designed with inclusion in mind, but with a local flair as well. A vibrant purple and gold color scheme displays their pride for East Carolina University, while high views and telescopes bring the focus back to the beautiful coastline.

Now Emerald Isle is beaming with pride over this unifying play space, as it brings families and kids together to play side by side and leave differences behind.

Like many communities in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, South Jordan City is experiencing rapid growth. More housing developments means more kids, and more kids means a greater need for places to play! South Jordan and the Rushton Meadows community came to Playworld looking to turn a lot behind a large multi-housing development into an inclusive play space that would connect the community.

It’s hard to top the majesty of the mountain ranges in the distance, but this orange and majestic purple play space provides a striking contrast. Best of all, it’s full of activities for kids of all abilities. Double-wide ramps that can be accessed straight from the berm wall and sidewalk invite wheelchair users to roll right into the coolest play features. One such feature is AeroGlider^™, a collaborative rocking motion experience kids (and even adults) love.

Another inclusive feature is the NEOS^® 360 Accessible electronic playground system nestled under a shade; it appeals to the gamers in us all and provides a good physical workout. Other sensory touches and a variety of challenge levels help make this playground an inclusive hangout for the whole community.

This urban park in sunny south Florida is the perfect sanctuary for kids and families looking to relax and have fun. In addition to ball fields, tennis courts, a fishing dock, and a boat ramp, children love to gather at the playground adjacent to the elementary school. The play space was due for a major update, however, and that’s where we come in!

Existing sidewalks, lighting, infrastructure, and fencing predetermined the size and shape of the layout we had to work with, but the owner didn’t want it to appear that way; they wanted the area to look like it was designed around the equipment. Veering away from the existing post-and-platform style, we made the most of the space available by playfully linking a variety of freestanding products. This also allowed us to meet the customer’s request for more play activities developmentally designed for children ages 2-5.

Climbing Squares under a shade provide a physical challenge for youngsters, while inspiring imaginative play and socialization. Pieces from our Unity^® Collection, on the other hand, engage older kids with more challenging and cooperative activity. Now there’s something for everyone at Pioneer Park, whether they’re waiting for school activities to let out or taking a break from a day of boating.

Patriot Park

Kids at Patriot Park in Saratoga Springs are singing a new version of an old familiar tune—“take me out to the playground.” When you see this one-of-a-kind baseball-themed playground, you’ll know why.

The community wanted to create a gathering space for residents of all ages, so they decided to build a sports complex that includes six baseball fields, batting cages, pickleball courts—and a playground that complements it all. Playworld representative Big T Recreation teamed up with the City of Saratoga Springs to bring their baseball-themed playground to life, complete with several enormous baseballs, and a bat and glove that kids can climb on. It also features plenty of swings, rope bridges, and slides. When Patriot Park was complete, it was dedicated to all military branches of the United States, in honor of the community’s proximity to Camp Williams, a National Guard training facility.

This new playground is ideal for kids who come to cheer for a family member on the field, but also want a space of their own to play. Since the complex opened, kids come from neighboring areas, too—the Patriot Park playground has certainly become a play destination in Utah.

Facing a competitive housing market, this single family residential community knew they needed to update their aging playground in order to set themselves apart. In addition to being somewhat drab and uninviting aesthetically, in comparison with the vibrant tropical landscape, their existing play space lacked the physical challenge to keep older kids engaged and entertained.

Playworld worked with community directors to design nature-themed play structures with tree post toppers and faux climbing rocks that blend in with the surroundings and add curb appeal. Specialized play areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12 provide age-appropriate physical challenges for all children. The resulting space now acts as an oasis for current residents and an eye-catching amenity for house hunters.

Oak Grove Park

In 2015, Arlington County Parks began renovations to its Oak Grove Park playscape. Local kids wanted a tower of excitement, and park officials wanted a playground that would fit in with its surroundings.

Arlington County Parks turned to Playground Specialists of Thurmont, Maryland for help. Playground Specialists provided a Super Branch Out structure to pay homage to the park’s landscape while giving kids a place to climb, socialize, and rest. Super Branch Out’s massive size and challenging play events ensure that it stands out—even among the oak trees.

Nestled on Lake Washington just across the I-90 floating bridge from Seattle is Mercer Island—a small city with a rich history. And the centerpiece for most of that history is Luther Burbank Park, a former homestead and boarding school. The park is one of the oldest destination parks in the region, and while its 1970s concrete playground is a visual landmark, it was time to update the space to offer a safer, more relevant play experience.

Wanting to protect the history and pay tribute to the original play space’s unique use of elevation change and mixed materials, the city worked with Playworld to develop a custom refurbished design. The biggest challenge was integrating play equipment into the existing space. A large brick pyramid-shaped landform got a safer makeover by being covered in concrete and resurfaced with poured-in-place rubber. A play structure platform and two slides were built into the feature, offering a unique sliding and climbing activity, as well as a beautiful view of the lake beyond the playground.

Ramps were also customized to offer ADA access from the upper level to the main traditional play structure. A PlayWeb continues the geometric aesthetic while offering a higher level of climbing challenge and a LiveWire Zip Line provides a modern, thrilling play experience for older kids.

Not wanting to detract from the playground’s iconic aesthetic, we chose to use more modern materials like metal and rope, as well as a sleek color palette of silver, red, and blue. The new design perfectly complements the remaining concrete and brick structures, as well as the new mosaics developed with the help of local students. This custom playground is now more popular than ever, and will continue to preserve the play and history of Mercer Island for many years to come.

Lollipop School

What makes the Lollipop School stand apart from other early childhood facilities? Its second-generation family ownership? Its ongoing reputation for excellence? Or its immense pirate ghost ship?

Actually, it’s all of those things. The stunning playground ship structure is a natural extension of the Lollipop School’s distinctive approach to learning. Along with his wife and his daughter, owner Jim Angelillo has continued the founding vision of his mother—to exceed expectations in providing an outstanding environment for early childhood development.

Located between New York City and the New Jersey suburbs, the Lollipop School serves pre-K through kindergarten children year-round, plus summer day camps for kids up to 12 years old. Their playground hosts more than 100 children a day, and even more in the summer. So when the time came for the latest playground update, Jim knew they would need something with serious capacity and durability. Safety, as always, would be top priority. And there was something else. A vision. A pirate ghost ship vision, to be exact.

“We already have a castle and a ship from Playworld,” Jim says, “and they’re great. But I wanted this to be something special, something big. Something nobody had seen before.”

It took a team of people—including Jim, his wife Kara, Playworld sales rep Scott Fenton of George Ely Associates, and Playworld’s engineering team—to bring the idea to life. From researching pirate ships online, through dozens of napkin sketches, and some creative new combinations of existing Playworld components, the pirate ghost ship took shape.

Its signature black sails and black panels, part of Jim’s original vision, were new, custom designs. The second-level deck, also part of the distinctive pirate ship look, created the perfect opportunity for the tube slide, irresistibly fun and reassuringly safe.

With a mix of stock and custom ground-level interactive play panels, multiple slides, lookouts and cannons galore, this whale of a vessel keeps the entire crew occupied with adventure, imagination and most importantly, activity. From eye appeal to play appeal, it’s been a hit with students, families and teachers alike—a rich source of quality play and exercise for the children at the Lollipop School.

“We love it. The kids love it. And their parents love it,” Jim says. “We couldn’t be happier.”

Little River Park

Little River Park was nearly unrecognizable following the 2013 EF5 tornado that tore through Moore, OK. Likewise, Plaza Towers Elementary school just blocks away, incurred tremendous damage, leaving children at a loss for the two places where they spent most of their time. However, in a multi-phase restoration project, with help from the CDBG Disaster Recovery Program, Moore kids finally have their favorite playgrounds back—and they’re better than ever.

The city involved the school children in selecting the theme for this second playground at Little River Park, and even let them pick their favorite playground bid—ours! With the help of colorful, graphic unitary surfacing, this playground is an oasis of land meets sea. A Branch Out and treehouse-inspired play structure serve as the focal point for the land portion of the play area—a welcome return of “tree play” and shade following the damage of more than 3,600 trees in the park. Additionally, a RockBlocks structure mimics a “mountain climbing” play experience.

Cross the narrow strip of “sand” and you’ll enter the sea portion of the play area. Two pirate ships (one with a sea serpent slide) inspire imaginary play, while several freestanding motion events offer spinning, shaking, and swaying activities.

Now that both the north and south playground projects are complete, as well as a new splash pad playground, children in Moore can get back outside, put the past behind them, and just play.

Latta Elementary

The small, rural town of Latta, South Carolina, is proud of its farming roots and community. They’re also proud of their brand new elementary school—a sign of burgeoning hope for the community, made possible through federal Recovery Act funds. In planning their new playground, the team at Latta Elementary School wanted to create a safe, modern space where kids could gather and play, both during and after school hours—a place to connect with community and with nature.

Like many educational communities, the people of Dillon School District 3 understood the importance of play on many levels: as a support to better academic performance and early childhood development; as a fertile field for seeding and growing confidence, physical and intellectual skills; and as an avenue to engage with nature and the outdoors.

That connection to the outdoors shaped Latta Elementary’s approach to incorporate nature themes into their new playground. Developed with the help of a landscape architect and local Playworld rep, the resulting design beautifully complements its surroundings with nature-inspired features including the garden gate entrance (with custom-lettered sign) and kid-safe synthetic turf to mimic real grass.

The nature story continues with the massive T-Rex bones, which emerge from the ground to spark imagination, exploration and climbing activity. The Log Hops allow kids to test their balance, while the RockBlocks Climbing Tunnel inspires climbing and imaginary play. The Hill Slide—a modular Slither Slide built right into the natural slope of the play area—further integrates play into the landscape while offering irresistible sliding excitement (rumor has it that even some grown-ups take an occasional turn). Thoughtful planning has also left room to grow, with future plans that include the addition of fitness stations, an amphitheater and other components.

To optimize play value and flow, the playground is organized into two distinct areas, providing engaging, age-appropriate play for the 2- to 5-year-old group and also 5-12 year olds. And people of all ages, from the superintendent and principal to the youngest guests, are delighted with the results. Naturally.

Lakeshore Woods Park

The City of Windsor is on a mission—determined to transform old, outdated playgrounds into family destination parks. Each year they look at the areas with the largest population of families with children and pick one or two parks to revitalize. And when it comes to the bid, one playground equipment supplier seems to tip the scale: New World Park Solutions.

Lakeshore Woods Park is one of those destination parks. In addition to a playground, families flock to the area for its soccer and frisbee fields. For this project, the city wanted to create a fantasy/nature experience. They also wanted to maximize their use of space in order to keep the required rubber surfacing costs low. New World Park Solutions came up with a creative nature-inspired design that has parents saying “It’s the only playground my children want to go to!”

The centerpiece of the play space is Branch Out—a component inspired by tree play and “branching out” to other traditional playground equipment. This product provides challenging and dynamic rope activities, as well as spots for perching and relaxing.

As one of the city’s requirements, play spaces must be designed to meet the needs of all children, with varying levels of challenge. Several products in this space, including the Cozy Cocoon, invite children of all abilities to join in on the fun. In addition to Branch Out, which is designed for children ages 5 to 12, this play space features an early childhood (2 to 5 year-old) area with products specially designed to encourage developing young minds.

The only complaint about this playground? Parents say their kids don’t want to leave! But that’s a good problem to have. Since opening, the park has been jam-packed nearly every day. Lakeshore Woods Park has become a destination for families—capturing children’s minds and immersing them in a world of imagination and wonder.

Ferris & Associates, a landscape architecture firm, was tasked with pitching a playground design to the city of Toronto that was full of imagination and the spirit of adventure. Taking cues from the rich history of 18^th century Fort York on the Toronto Harbour, they contacted the local Playworld representative to put together a sea-worthy play space idea.

From the original concept sketches, the Playworld team designed two custom ship play structures complete with sail post toppers, masts, and portholes. One ship is “docked” at the Fort, which features multiple roofs, slides, and faux-wood panels. These nautical-themed structures facilitate very specific role play and imagination, while a PlayForm 7 play sculpture on the other side of the playground, resembling a “sinking ship”, further encourages kids to think outside the box and find new ways to play. Additional freestanding pieces like a Spinami and Unity Canopy add more physical challenge and tie the whole space together.

Playworld and Ferris & Associates worked intimately with the city as the designs evolved over time. The finished Lakeshore Park is now a unique, adventure-filled oasis for kids and families that speaks to the community’s harbor history.

Krumm Park

Blue Jackets management envisioned a high-capacity, high-energy playground based on their passion: hockey. Together, we designed and engineered an industry-first hockey-themed playground.The NHL Columbus Blue Jackets teamed with Playworld to give back to their community by reviving Krumm Park, part of Columbus Recreation and Parks, with a hat trick: imagination, invention and installation.

Kelly Elementary

The Great Green Garden playground blends custom-designed elements with our traditional components. The Small and Medium Garden Groves, Wildwood Climber and Wacky Log are just a handful of components that you can use to bring an organic feel to your playground design.

Hufnagle Park

Spanning 8,500 square feet of unitary safety surfacing by No Fault^® Surfaces, Kidsburg includes many new playground elements in climbers, slides, swings, and shade for people ages 2 and up. PlaySoleil^™ solar-powered lighting will illuminate the playground after-hours, shining light in a downward trajectory from atop the equipment.

High Point Park

Harmony Playground

The new, inclusive playground at Memorial Park in Mount Vernon began with a single piece of equipment—Crossfit 1808 raised money to donate a piece of inclusive play equipment to the Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Inspired by the gift, the board began discussing the possibility of transforming the playground at Memorial Park into a fully inclusive play space.

Members of the Board met with Playworld representative Midstates Recreation. Together, they crafted a vision of a new playground, one that could be enjoyed by all children and caregivers. Armed with a dream and a financial goal, the Board began a grassroots fundraising effort that enlisted the support of local businesses and organizations, as well as members of the community. Support for the new playground was overwhelming, and the space was named Harmony Playground.

Harmony Playground features bright colors and a variety of equipment, including an Accessible Whirl, Drop Zone, and AeroGlider^™. A central T-Rex climber serves as the playground’s focal point, and inclusive surfacing ensures that everyone can access the fun.

A ribbon-cutting was held in April and, despite rain, over 150 community members showed up to celebrate the new play space. Steve Oster, Superintendent of the Knox County Board of Developmental Disabilities, said the playground is a win for everybody.

“It’s wonderful to see the kids’ faces. They can play in the same space and help each other.”

“People come from neighboring counties, which brings business to the community. We donated the playground to the City after it was completed, and the Mayor said it was the best gift he’s ever gotten.”

Located in Southwest Regina, Saskatchewan, Harbour Landing is a housing development that operates as a miniature town. Designed to meet the increasing demand for neighborhoods where people can live, work, and play in the same area, the community made the decision to invest bigtime in amenities: which includes 11 parks and 6 playgrounds! Why so many? For one, they enhance land use efficiency. Harbour Landing used integrated solutions to meet municipal and provincial drainage and open space requirements. But the reason for their large play investment goes beyond requirements. The developer truly realizes the value and ROI of play.

At the heart of Harbour Landing, one of those playgrounds has become a centerpiece of fun, educational play value. Featuring a dinosaur theme, this playground has faux eggs and skeletons that encourage exploration and open-ended play, as well as boulders and ropes to provide a physical challenge. The play space has helped to connect Harbour Landing to the larger surrounding community; organizations such as the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and the Saskatchewan Science Centre have collaborated to create community events in the prehistoric park for children and parents alike.

Named after a prominent civil rights activist and educational scholarship pioneer, the George I. Sanchez Collaborative Community School has a deep commitment to the growth and high achievement of every student. The first Albuquerque school to serve kindergarten through 8th grade, the Sanchez School promotes principles of critical thinking, innovation and collaboration.

Another one of their core values is high expectations. Standard isn’t good enough—and those expectations extend to their playground. With more than 1,200 children spanning a wide range of ages, interests and abilities, the school needed a play space with the capacity and durability to serve a large and growing student population with superior levels of engagement, challenge, and (lest we forget) fun.

In the spirit of collaboration, Playworld worked with school leadership to formulate a playground with integrated play flow, yet with distinct areas and intuitive navigation to facilitate kids’ access to age-appropriate play.

A Bambino^™ play structure provides pre-K children with physical and intellectual engagement specifically designed for little hands and hearts. For 5- to 12-year-olds, Adventure Series Climbers offer self-regulated challenge, confidence building and creative problem solving, and the Unity^® Dome reinvents classic climbing dome play with innovative design. Its whimsical circles form asymmetric climbing paths for fresh mind and body challenge, and its more open layout invites kids to interact with each other while playing in, on and around. Meanwhile, ENERGI^® fitness systems present the ideal activity for 7-8th graders who might feel too grown up for “little kid” playgrounds, but who nevertheless relish exercise and an outlet for their energy. Adding to the specialized play features, the Cozy Cocoon^™ is more than just a fun motion experience—it also serves as a calming space for children on the autism spectrum to take a break from sensory input.

This park is just steps from the ocean, but it’s situated on a long, narrow plot of land and bounded by major streets on three sides. Seeking a compact, yet creative oasis with a beachy feel, the customer commissioned Playworld to design a custom play destination.

We made the most of the small space, using a mix of standard playground components and brand new creations. The highlight of this playground is the concrete lighthouse set atop a rocky shore that kids can climb (from outside or inside) to access a deck. Custom ocean graphic panels and a sea-worthy color palette further enhance the coastal vibe. And because it’s always sunny in Sunny Isles, shades over the entire space make it a “cool” place to hang out.

Edward L Gaylord Downtown YMCA Child Development Center

One of the preschools affected by the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the YMCA Child Development Center has since relocated to a new facility just a few blocks away with the help of donations from the Gaylord Foundation. The Center was looking to replace their old, bland playground structure with something more age-appropriate and inclusive.

Our Playworld representative envisioned a whimsical, colorful, garden-themed playground with two unique zones: one for infants ages 6-24 months and one for kids ages 2-5. The infant area includes a variety of sensory panels and a special ground-level bridge for toddlers learning to walk, while the other zone offers a more challenging, traditional playground experience.

Playworld worked to design the space around the the existing trees and tricycle path to minimize demolition costs and create a naturally integrated aesthetic. PlayTown activities like the Gas Station and stop signs are placed along the edge of the trike path to encourage both imaginative play and critical thinking skills. Curved LolliTop^™ roofs, posts, and components take inspiration from the YMCA’s logo, bringing a rainbow of color and playfulness to the space. Additionally, poured in place surfacing, ground level play events, and a Cozy Cocoon^™ enable kids of all abilities to play together—something that wasn’t possible with their previous playground.

The space has been well received by the kids, teachers, and parents alike. “Thank you so much for the added joy!” one parent writes. Now the Center can put aside the lingering memories of tragedy, and focus on the bright, happy future ahead.

East Riverfront Park

The City of South Jordan has always tried to include activities for a wide variety of people at East Riverfront Park—but they wanted to do more, so they decided to replace their current playground with an all-inclusive play space that people of all abilities could come to and enjoy the outdoors.

The community came together to fund the new playground. It was a team effort that included the City of South Jordan, Salt Lake County, the South Jordan Rotary Club, the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, and the Michel Foundation.

Playworld representative Big T Recreation worked with the City to build a playground with a theme that fits the natural park around it. This playground is complete with Sculpted Play Elements, a Cozy Cocoon, and an AeroGlider^™. Here you’ll find sensory, physical, and social activities for kids of all abilities. One of the favorite activities is the Vibes from our Concerto line which can be heard throughout the park.

While the nature theme encourages the imagination, it’s the all-inclusive activities that accomplished this community’s ultimate goal.

Deer Lakes has been a destination park that families in the greater Pittsburgh area have flocked to for quite a while, with places to play, cool off, fish, hike, and even look up at the stars! As part of Allegheny County’s commitment to refresh local parks, the playground at Deer Lakes received a much needed upgrade. Conveniently, it’s just around the corner from one of our Playworld representative offices!

Mindful of budget and the existing layout, we worked closely with the parks director and landscape architect to design a nature-inspired space that would keep kids entertained and challenged for hours. A natural color scheme with faux wood and rock materials and rope elements allows the play structures to blend in seamlessly with the surroundings.

The focal point of the playground is Branch Out—a challenging component that looks and plays like a tree, but connects to traditional activities like slides and steel climbers. A faux-boulder and net area off to the side works with the natural layout and contours of the land, while providing a range of climbing challenges for kids at every level. Without needing to create a custom net structure, we were able to use our standard Listo product and install it on the small incline to create a hill-climbing adventure. A separate, age-appropriate play structure for kids 2-5 carries the same natural aesthetic, but provides easier challenges and sensory activities. And of course, no play space is complete without an area for swinging; standard swings, accessible swings, and our Hoopla Swing offer a solitary or collaborative motion experience.

Although already a favorite family park, the feedback from the playground improvements has been overwhelming. One parent remarks that the new equipment encourages kids to continue exploring, and that even older children enjoy the challenging new activities. From the new play space and the nearby splash pad to all the natural amenities, Deer Lakes Park is the perfect “day-cation” getaway.

This play space, located next to a baseball field, had a lot of potential, but needed some updated playground equipment. Our premier installation of Climbing Squares made it the perfect community gathering place and a great spot to hang out during baseball practice!

Crystal Cove Apartments was looking for a way to set their complex apart and decided they could do so by upgrading their outdoor recreation space. The existing tennis courts were showing their age and were underutilized by residents, so the community directors decided to redesign the area to attract residents both young and old. A multi-generational playground was just the answer.

Playworld worked with the directors to make sure there was something for everyone, from a custom designed, nature-themed play structure for kids to an area with outdoor fitness equipment for adults. By putting these spaces in a side-by-side layout, families would be able to utilize the space and spend outdoors time together. We packed the maxiumum amount of play value into their set footprint, and helped them add actual dollar-value to their property too. Not only was the playground a huge hit with current residents, but it proved to be an incredible sales tool that attracted new tenants too! At a check-in nearly three years later, play was still paying off at Crystal Cove.

When Montecito Community School received a much-needed state grant, they didn’t just invest in new books and new computers. They bought a new playground. They recognized how vitally important play is to the school day. The new playground put the physical back in to the physical ed curriculum, and gave students a new outlet for their imaginations and energy at recess. The investment paid off: teachers report that all that play has translated into better classroom performance.

City Hall Plaza

PlayForm 7 made a temporary appearance on City Hall Plaza as part of Design Museum Foundation’s Extraordinary Playscapes exhibition. The interactive art installation spoke to Boston’s legacy of arts and provided residents and visitors alike with an unconventional summer playground.

Chinatown Park on The Rose Kennedy Greenway

After nearly two years collaborating with architect Richard Dattner to develop PlayCubes, Playworld installed the first PlayCubes playground in Boston’s Chinatown Park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a stretch of contemporary park space dedicated to connecting people and the city. The installation was part of The Design Museum Foundation’s Extraordinary Playscapes exhibition, a multi-city, nomadic display that focused on the importance and design of play.

While originally slated as a temporary installation, PlayCubes in Chinatown Park became much more than a museum piece. They became a gathering place for the surrounding neighborhoods.

Suddenly, residents saw an influx of families, children, and professionals connecting outside in a way they’d never seen before. After The Greenway Conservancy sent out a bilingual Chinese/English survey to local community members and leaders, they discovered the community’s virtually unanimous passion for the pop-up play space. This led to a decision to keep them there indefinitely.

PlayCubes in Chinatown Park have become a vibrant hub of community connection in the midst of an urban landscape, demonstrating that a pocket park can be just as transformative as a large destination playground.

While planning for a new playground, Kendra Angell, former Burton PTO President, realized that physically disabled students were sitting by and watching others play. Kendra dreamt that children of all abilities would be able to play together at Burton. Many fundraisers and some very generous donations later, an inclusive playground for children of all abilities became a reality.

Additionally, adults with impaired mobility can also use the playground to be with their own children after school hours and in the summertime.

There’s a something about the Chesapeake Bay that captures the heart—a distinctive charm that has drawn families to its shores for generations. Many of those Bay families live full- or part-time in the countless small, private communities that trace the water’s edge.

Beverly Beach is one of those—a small neighborhood not far from Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. Like many tight-knit communities, it’s proud of its heritage and thoughtful about managing its legacy for future generations.

So when the time came to replacing the weathered, out-of-date (and out of code) playground, the community came together (with more than 80 residents attending at one of the weeknight meetings) to discuss play preferences and priorities, and to form a clear vision of what the new Beverly Beach Community playground should be.

They wanted the best of the old—classic playground features that never get old—with some new twists, turns and adventure. They also wanted a design and color palette that would harmonize with the beautiful Chesapeake Bay waterfront environment.

The resulting playground includes nods to the classics, like swings—every bit as simple and fun as the original, but safe, up-to-code and built to endure. Slides are here, too, but with exciting innovations that capture attention and lots of repeat customers. Two 360° Slither Slides swoop down from towering 9′ lookout decks. The slide offerings continue with the irresistible Trippple Racer Slide^™—fun for one, two or three friends plunging to the finish line. Other play features include “the funnel”—a tapered tunnel that requires walking and crawling to navigate—and the dynamic Adventure Bridge, which offers exciting (and safe) balance challenge, responding to movement as kids make the crossing.

With its nautical blues and cascades of slides, the aquatic-inspired design pops against the scenic background. The new playground is now a favorite destination for Beverly Beach families. A point of connection (as well as pride) for the community, it’s a beautiful beacon of play on the Bay.

In the 19^th century, Xenia was one of the largest railroad hubs in the U.S., which significantly contributed to the city’s growth. But many of those historical reminders were stripped away when the town was struck by an F5 tornado in 1974.

A city-wide action plan for more park and recreation opportunities spurred the dream for a railroad themed playground. What Playworld delivered went above and beyond. After extensive historical research and collaboration, we recreated “Bullskin Trace”—the city’s original main street. A custom play structure for kids ages 5-12 mimics the architectural characteristics and industries of Xenia’s original buildings, while a train play structure nearby for ages 2-5 gives a nod to the industry that started it all.

Augusta Evans Elementary

For Augusta Evans School in Mobile, Alabama, the new school building was a welcome update. But with limited budget, the project did not include a playground. Teachers and administrators knew they had to fill the gap.

Augusta Evans School is specialized—serving only kids with cognitive and physical disabilities. Children with special needs are more prone to obesity and diabetes. And children with ADHD and/or autism need outlets for excess energy. The benefits of play were not optional here.

So, fundraising began. Volunteers hosted golf outings, sold bricks, and reconditioned Mardi Gras beads for resale. Principal Allen Baggett launched a speaking tour of local organizations, barbecues, biker clubs—anywhere people were standing still. And people responded, including a major donation from the Rotary Club of Mobile.

Then came the next challenge: finding the right partner to build a playground for kids with special needs.

Principal Baggett researched all the options locally, regionally, and nationally. He talked to lots of people. Then he chose Playworld. “I needed someone who specialized in play,” he says. “This playground
needed to be great.”

Baggett worked with Warren Schlender, Playworld rep in Marietta, Georgia. “Warren came to see the school and meet the kids,” Bagget says. “He got a sense for what we needed, and gave us ideas, options, and a plan.”

The result is lots of fun and exercise for the kids, and lots of specialized features to accommodate diverse abilities. In fact, the playground is A–rated for inclusivity, thanks to a full range of activities, challenge levels, cozy spaces (for sensory relief), transfer stations, and wheelchair access.

Principal Baggett highlights other features, too, including the surface material. “A lot of our kids have challenges with getting around. Between that and potential falls, I like knowing our kids are safe.”

The NEOS^® 360°—an electronic challenge game with lights and touch pads—is a center of attention, prompting lots of friendly competition. “It wears them out,” Baggett says. “It wears me out!”

The playground gets rave reviews from students and teachers alike. It’s helped everyone make the emotional transition to the new school, and it helps the kids focus in class—so they can get back outside for more recess.

It took a lot of hard work to bring the power of play to the Augusta Evans kids. But considering the physical, emotional, and social benefits, we’d say it was well worth the effort.

Apollo Park

The Town of Alsip needed a special play space for its Apollo Park. Named after the Apollo space program, the playground originally featured an outer space theme, but had long since been replaced by more conventional equipment.

Playworld representative Reese Recreation helped Apollo Park get back to its roots, but with a modern twist—much of the new equipment is accessible for all abilities. Featuring two rocket-themed structures, a NEOS Arc, and several items from our Unity collection, Apollo’s new playground is an exciting place for all future space explorers!
