Playworld announces winners of its "Write to Play" playground contest

LEWISBURG, PA (July 17, 2013) – Playworld, a leading manufacturer of imaginative playground and fitness equipment, today announced Parker's Woods Park in Mason City, Iowa and St. Norbert School in Northbrook, Illinois, are the winners of its “Write to Play” playground contest, which launched in May.

The two communities received the most votes on Playworld’ Facebook page, where the contest was administered. To enter, both winners had to complete an online entry form including a brief essay explaining why they wanted to bring play to their local community. They were also required to upload a photo of where the new playground would be installed. Once finalists were selected, those that “liked” Playworld’ Facebook page were able to vote for their favorite community and/ or school.

“I want to bring play to Mason City, Iowa because I feel we need to show children that exercise can be fun at an early age,” wrote Sarah Swegle in her essay submitting Parker’s Woods Park. “Providing a place for children to exercise and families to socialize would benefit everyone. Our Parker's Woods Park is one of the few parks on Mason City's west side and it is severely lacking in playground equipment for our 2‐5 year old children. So many children in the area would benefit from safe, modern play equipment!”

Stacy Seiden’s essay nominating St. Norbert School highlighted Kyle Caraher, a 17-year-old varsity football player who lost his life in a car accident last summer. “To honor the memory of Kyle and his child-like charm, the Caraher family founded Kyle's Dreaming Tree. The project is raising funds to build a new playground where Kyle attended elementary school. The idea for the playground came to his mom, Karen Caraher, after she read an article in the school newspaper commemorating Kyle. Searching through his belongings after his death, Kyle’s friends found architectural plans to build a tree house in his yard. The drawing accompanied a story about Kyle in the school paper. When Karen saw the picture, inspiration struck. The family chose to focus on Kyle’s elementary school partially because of his lighthearted personality. The school also very much needs a new playground. The current one consists mostly of concrete with a few older pieces of play equipment.”

“We congratulate the two winners and commend all contest participants for their passion for play,” said Jenn Harry, interactive media manager for Playworld. “We look forward to working with these two communities in the coming months to bring the transformative power of play to their area.”

Other contest finalists include:

Elementary School in Dorchester, MA
MCDC Riverside Park, Moline, IL
Police Athletic League, Pottstown, PA
Lincoln Middle School, Greensboro, NC
